Vacations

September 2012 saw our first interstate trip away with the boys. Since then we’ve been to a few more places.

From when the boys were born until September 2012 we hadn’t travelled outside of Victoria for a holiday. Before 2001 destinations included all Australian states and territories except for the Northern Territory. We even squeezed in a trip to Germany and the UK before Kyle was born.

Photos taken before 2002 are film and slides; and these will take some time to get onto the web.

Nagambie

January 2016

After losing access to holidays in Inverloch we thought we would try a holiday resort. This was booked way back in June 2015 on our way to Echuca.

It was great as we were close to the water for using the kayak; and the waterways were perfect for it. But in peak period there are people, cars and boats everywhere. The river was quite busy with power boats roaring up and down, and the Personal Watercraft were especially noisy and scary from a kayaker’s point of view.

After the 15th January the place empties significantly, by almost two thirds; and it’s much more pleasant. Instead of having to book for a minimum of one week (which is about 4 days too long) after the 15th bookings would be unnecessary and you could stay for a much shorter time.

Tasmania

September 2015

Our first trip on a ship together as a family. Well, it was the ferry to Tasmania, a bit of a voyage.

Canberra

September 2012

Our first interstate trip together as a family.

It went very well, boredom was kept low with a fast moving itinerary; although some members of the family thought we spent too much time at train museums!

Mathoura

May/June 2002

Our first and last trip with only one child Kyle!

We visited Ballarat, Bendigo and Echuca along the way ending up at the opening ceremony of Crane’s Bridge in Mathoura.

This was our first trip away with the new Fuji Film FinePix 2400 Zoom. Was going well until I ran out of memory card space, and with nowhere to off load the images I had to change to a lower resolution to squeeze Daylesford in.

Singapore

Nov 2000

An excellent stop over on the way home from Germany. Loved the zoo. The whole place is so clean and neat.

A very safe and fun place to visit.

Germany

Oct 2000

We spent most of our time at Hamburg staying with a penfriend. Lots to see and do. I was very impressed with Blankenese and an old ship that is moored in the harbour. Could not believe the size of the diesel engine.

The food was as good as Australia if not better.

UK

Sep 2000

Our last major trip before Kyle was born, and we made the most of it.

Just loved it here, except for the food. Unless you spend a lot, that is the same face value as Australian dollars the quality can be poor. We went when it was AU$1=0.33p and did it hurt!

Loved the railways the most. The National Railway Museum is a must see. I could have spent two days there if Karen had let me.

Queensland

Dec 1997

A driving holiday up to Queensland staying at Lamington National Park, Noosa and with friends at the Glasshouse Mountains and near Brisbane.

The highlight was watching the birds come up to you at Lamington National Park. Just lovely to watch.

Bendigo

Jun 1997

Travelling up to Bendigo for Leanne Rouse’s & Mark’s wedding. Whilst there we visited the Chinese museum and the Castlemaine & Maldon tourist railway complete with K Class Steam Locomotive.

Ballarat Apr 1997

Sovereign Hill, visit Jeff & Sharon @ Buninyoung

Leongatha Dec 1996

Steam train ride -South Gippsland Railway. Not sure if this railway is running still or not.

Everytime we visit nothing is happening.

South Australia break Nov 1995

Including Murray Bridge, Hahndorf, Birdwood, Glenelg, Barossa Valley, Victor Harbour, Adelaide, Padthaway and Mt Gambier.

Missed seeing the railway museum in Port Adelaide. Next time!

Bright April 1995
Warnambool Feb 1995

Mary Rose exhibition.

NSW Trip Jan 1994

First making our way to Merimbula and then working our way up to Wauchope. Highlights included getting locked in Timbertown!

Swan Hill Feb 1993

Tasmania

Nov 1991

A great two week trip. Highlights included Port Arthur where we did a ghost tour and a cruise on the Franklin River at Strahn.

Echuca

Sept 1991

Made this trip in Karen’s green Corolla. Reliable enough, but not very comfortable.

Western Australia
Perth, Hyden
Sept 1990

Included amazing places such as Hyden (Wave Rock), Kalbarrie and the Pinnicles. It was like another planet!

Canberra, Sydney and Katoomba Jan 1990

First trip Karen and I took together.

Lake Eildon

Jan 1989

Camping on the shore with Tim and company.

Not a great place for sailing as the wind was very turbulent. This time I had my Hobie Cat 14. I had just had the centre canvas done and they hadn’t used a thick enough rope to hold it in the slot, so we kept slipping into the drink!

Bali

Oct 1988

These photos were taken with Michael Whiteley and David Skinner. We all had a great time.

All the photos are slides and were taken with my old Praktica LTL3. They were copied by projecting the slide as you normally do for viewing and photographed with the digital camera mounted on a tripod. Seemed to work all right but they look a bit out of focus.

Lake Eildon

Jan 1989

With colleagues from Telstra, Dandenong Telephone exchange. Took the Mirror dinghy and it went quite well.

Cradle Mountain walk

Feb 1988

Laurie Glover organised a walk from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair and I’m glad he did. It’s a must do for any bush walker as the scenery is beautiful; well worth the cold, mud and discomfort.

Stawell to Melbourne

Dec 1987

Bike ride with 3700 other riders, organised by Bicycle Victoria.

Queensland Jul 1987

By rail, meeting up with David Skinner, staying at the Tiki Village.

New Zealand May 1986

With Contiki tours, 2.5 weeks

Merrijig Dec 1985

Horse riding with Tim & co.
